Experimental Station of the former Agricultural Department of Sun Yat-Sen University, established by Professor Ding Ying known as the father of rice crop science. As a non-profit research institute, it is now the Guangzhou Branch of National Rice Improvement Center as well as the birthplace of Dwarf Rice breeding. Currently, there are 185 employee in GDRRI, among them there are 92 specialized technical staff, 51 experts with senior professional title and 49 employee with PhD degree. Equipped with advanced research facilities, including the Guangdong Key Laboratory of New Technology in Rice Breeding£¬National Germplasm Nursery of Wild Rice, Guangzhou,  Guangdong Provincial Gene Bank of Rice, phytotrons and facilities for the rice molecular biology research, GDRRI mainly engages in the collection, conservation and utilization of rice germplasm, development of new rice varieties and new breeding technology, rice farming and cultivation, physiology and ecology of rice, as well as the promotion and transformation of research achievements and relative technical service .
So far, GDRRI has won 242 research awards, including 17 national level awards and 112 ministerial and provincial level awards; 31 patents including 23 patents for inventions; and 75 new plant variety rights. 771 rice varieties cultivated by GDRRI have been approved by relevant above-provincial department, including 106 gaining national-level approvals. 31 rice varieties have been cultivated with the total planting area of more than 10 million mu (about 6.7 million hectares). The rice varieties and related technologies developed by GDRRI accounted for 75% of the rice planting area in Guangdong, with a transformation rate over 90% for its research achievements. GDRRI has provided strong technological support for the rice production in Guangdong Province and even in the whole southern China, the indica rice growing regions, and has made significant contributions to the national food security.

GDRRI was awarded as the ¡°Guangdong Excellent Research and Development Institute¡± by Guangdong Provincial Government, and ¡°National May 1st Labor Prize¡± by All-China Federation of Trade Unions,  and ¡°Guangdong Provincial Civilization Unit¡± by the provincial government and ranked the 4th place in the national assessment of comprehensive research strength among agricultural research institutes in China. Staff of GDRRI have won various honorary titles, including 12 employees received the title of the national or provincial Model Worker, 27 enjoyed the government special allowance, 5 conferred as the ¡°Guangdong Ding Ying Science and Technology Award¡±, 1 as the national expert with outstanding contribution and 4 as the provincial experts with outstanding contribution, 3 as the agricultural technical experts with outstanding contribution to the national food production and 8 as the rural advanced technical workers in Guangdong. 
Brilliant History
Pioneered the distant hybridization breeding of wild rice and cultivated rice
Based on the natural hybrid progeny of perennial common wild rice, Professor Ding Ying, the founder of GDRRI, succeeded in the breeding of a new rice variety ¡°Zhongshan 1¡±, the first variety in the world with wild rice consanguinity, followed by many other competitive rice varieties derived from, such as ¡°Zhongshan Zhan¡±, ¡°Zhongshan Hong¡±, ¡°Zhongshan Bai¡±, ¡°Baoxuan 2¡±, ¡°Baotaiai¡±, etc., in South China. In total, these varieties have been planted about 124 million mu, with the growing period of over 60 years. Professor Ding also successfully developed many other varieties, including ¡°Yinyin 20¡±, ¡°Dongyin 1¡±, and ¡°Chenghei 7¡±, etc. by crossing the cultivated rice with Indian wild rice. He is the first rice scientist in China who develop new rice varieties by crossing cultivated rice with wild rice, initiated a new way of rice breeding by wild-cultivated hybridization. 
Initiated the rice dwarfing breeding which is known as the first ¡°Green Revolution¡±
During the 1950s and 1960s, the research team of GDRRI headed by Professor Yaoxiang Huang (the Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering) successfully developed the first semi-dwarf rice variety ¡°Guangchangai¡±, followed by the success in breeding a complete set of many other new varieties which are either early-maturing, middle-maturing or late-maturing, including ¡°Zhenzhuai¡±, ¡°Guangluai 4¡±, ¡°Guangjie 9¡±, ¡°Zhaiyeqing 8¡±, ¡°Shuanggui 1¡±, ¡°Guichao 2¡± and ¡°Teqing 2¡±, etc. The success of rice dwarfing breeding intensifies the fertilizer tolerance and lodging resistance of rice. The rice yield drastically raised from 150-250 kg/mu in the 1950s to 350-450 kg/mu. The extensive popularity of large number of improved dwarfing rice varieties in rice production plays a vital role in feeding the huge population in China and is a significant breakthrough in the history of rice breeding, reputed in the world as ¡°the first green revolution¡±. On June 29, 2019, the Achievement Exhibition for the 60th Anniversary of Rice Dwarfing Breeding and the International Symposium for commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Rice Dwarfing Breeding were held ceremoniously in Guangzhou.

    Breeding of new rice varieties with super high yield and good quality by ¡°Cross Combination and Population Selection Method¡± and Rice Ecological Breeding Theory established by Academician Huang Yaoxiang.
    ​ Six super rice varieties were bred and approved by the Ministry of Agriculture of China.

Due to the outstanding achievements in serving society and self-construction, GDRRI has received many awards and honors, including "Guangdong Outstanding Research and Development Institution" by Guangdong Provincial People's Government in 1995; "National May 1st Labor Award" in 2002; the winner in the first institutional assessment of non-profit research institutions reflecting Guangdong's advantages and characteristics; "Excellent Non-profit Scientific Research Institution"; and "Guangdong Provincial Civilized Unit" for the second time in 2011.
